Day One
Fly to the Azores!
Day Two
Early morning arrival today in the Azores at Ponta Delgada. After settling in, we'll head out to explore some of São Miguel's most iconic natural wonders. First, we'll visit Sete Cidades, a massive volcanic crater stretching over 5 miles wide and 11 miles long, renowned for its breathtaking twin lakes—Lagoa Azul (the blue lake) and Lagoa Verde (the green lake), which create a stunning contrast against the lush green landscape. This area, located on the western side of the island, offers one of the most magnificent panoramic views in the Azores from the famous Vista do Rei viewpoint, and we'll have time to wander the charming village streets below. In the afternoon, we'll continue to Lagoa do Fogo, or "Lake of Fire," a pristine crater lake nestled within the Água de Pau stratovolcano in the center of the island. Formed about 15,000 years ago and protected as a natural reserve since 1974, this isolated spot provides a pure encounter with nature, perfect for hiking trails or simply soaking in the dramatic vistas of the surrounding volcanic terrain and ocean beyond.
Day Three
Today, we'll embark on a tour of Furnas, immersing ourselves in the island's volcanic heart. Located in a verdant valley on the eastern side of São Miguel, Furnas is famous for its geothermal activity, including steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, and hot springs that showcase the Azores' active volcanic landscape. The day culminates at Terra Nostra Garden, a historic botanical park dating back to 1780 and spanning about 30 acres, filled with rare flora, exotic plants, and winding paths. You'll have the opportunity to relax in its famous thermal bath—a large, naturally warm pool of iron-rich, brownish water that's said to have therapeutic properties, surrounded by lush gardens for a truly rejuvenating experience.
Day Four
Enjoy a free day today in the Azores to relax or explore at your own pace! Based in Ponta Delgada, the charming capital of São Miguel, you could stroll through its historic center with black-and-white mosaic streets, visit the 16th-century Convent of Our Lady of Hope to see the revered statue of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, or browse local markets for Azorean crafts and pineapple plantations nearby. For nature lovers, optional activities include whale-watching tours from the marina (the Azores are a prime spot for spotting sperm whales and dolphins) or a leisurely hike along the coast. Alternatively, unwind at a seaside café sampling fresh seafood and regional wines, or venture to nearby beaches like Mosteiros for dramatic lava rock formations and sunset views. This flexible day allows you to customize your experience before we head to the mainland.
Day Five
Today you will have a free morning before transferring to the airport for your flight to Porto, Portugal!
Day Six
Today we will visit Castelo do Quejo. Next is Palacio do Bolsa, a historic building that was once a stock exchange and now serves as a symbol of Porto's rich history. The Luis I Bridge is another amazing landmark- it offers stunning views of the banks of Porto and is an impressive feat of engineering. Lastly, we will be sure to visit the Porto Cathedral, a beautiful religious site that has been standing for centuries and is a testament to Porto's cultural heritage.
Day Seven
Travel today on a bus to Lisbon. On our day trip, we will stop in Nazare to have lunch and explore a few sights. Once we arrive in Lisbon, there are several must-visit landmarks. The Belem Tower is a 16th-century fortification that played a significant role in the history of Portugal. The tower served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers. The Jeronimos Monastery is another must-visit location and was formerly a monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome. Lastly, we will visit the Padrao dos Descobrimentos Monument, built-in 1939 to honor the Portuguese Discoveries of the golden XV and XVI centuries. The monument is an impressive tribute to Portugal's rich history and is a popular tourist destination.
Day Eight
While in Lisbon, you'll have the opportunity to visit some fascinating landmarks. Sao Jorge Castle is an old historic castle that has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC. The castle's fortifications date back to the 1st century BC and offer stunning views of the surrounding area. The Lisbon Cathedral is another must-visit location and is the main cathedral of Portugal/Lisbon. The Praca do Comercio is a large harbor-facing plaza that offers a great place to relax and soak in the city's atmosphere. The Carmo Convent is another historic site that is worth a visit. While the cathedral has lost its walls and ceiling, the remaining ruins are still beautiful. Lastly, we will see the Rossio Square, a local square that comes alive in the evening and offers a glimpse into Lisbon's vibrant nightlife.
Day Nine
Today we will take a day-trip to Sintra. We will see the Pena Palace, which is a 19th-century Romanticist architecture, historic estate and villa, gardens, and royal palaces and castles. The palace is considered the gem of Portugal and was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Moorish Castle is another historic castle located on a hilltop that offers fantastic views of the surrounding valley. Quinta da Regaleria is a beautiful area with water features, plants, underground tunnels, and interesting architecture.
