Today we transfer to Lake Atitlán. Upon arrival enjoy a visit to the villages of Santa Catarina and San Antonio Palopó. Santa Catarina is a quiet village along the shores of Lake Atitlan located just 3 miles south-southeast of Panajachel. The population of this town is 5,000 with the majority of the indigenous residents descending from the Kaqchikel Maya.
The Indigenous women of Santa Catarina Palopo continue to carry on the art of hand-woven weaving on a back-strap loom producing clothing (traje) for their family as well as for tourists. San Antonio Palopó, a small town that has remained fairly unspoiled. Unlike Panajachel, you will not find many tourists here, there are few hotels or restaurants, and the town’s life centers around it’s ceramics and textiles, with it’s small and picturesque church acting as the focal point. The unique
pottery at San Antonio Palopó has evolved from the ancient Maya pottery influenced by modern techniques.
Both villages, Santa Catarina and San Antonio offer spectacular views of the lake along with rich and distinctive traditions of Mayan culture. This afternoon you’ll have free time to explore the Calle Santander before before heading back to Antigua Guatemala.
